Barrett Brae Home Tour

A Mid-century Modern Journey

main

One of St. Louis’ premier mid-century modern neighborhoods

INTRODUCTION

Established in 1955, the Barrett Brae Subdivision is situated in both the City of Kirkwood and unincorporated St. Louis County. It is a collection of mid-century modern houses nestled in the undulating hills north of the intersection of Barrett Station and Big Bend roads. The name, derived from Scottish language, specifically the word "Brae," which connotes a slope or hillside, characterizes our community.

Svoboda Shell, being one of the sponsors, the Barrett Brae Home Tour 2023, was a smashing success! The tour provided attendees with the chance to explore homes that were built in the 1950s and 60s and have retained much of their original charm. Visitors were able to admire the classic mid-century features, such as the use of natural materials like wood and stone, the use of large windows to connect indoor-outdoor living spaces, and extensive use of vibrant colors and geometric patters.
